Better Homes & Gardens:
Re-design

editorial design

The magazine Better Homes & Gardens offers many wonderful tips and tricks to create the better and beautiful home you want. This redesign was inspired by the idea of focusing more on the home and gardens aspect and less on the family aspect of the current magazine. The purpose is to appeal to audiences that are homeowners without families. Many home magazines are very focused on audiences that have homes with a family, but there are plenty of people with homes or apartments that aren't within that demographic but are interested in home tips and tricks for improving their dream living space. The re-design simplifies— featuring more negative space in order to allow audiences to focus on the information that interests them.

*Disclaimer— this is a student project, Better Homes & Gardens has no real involvement with this re-design.

The magazine cover was re-designed with a white-border around the cover imagery rather than having it a full bleed. The benefit of this frame is that it allows people to focus in more on the image as well as its contents— the listed feature articles.

To grab the attentions of readers, the magazine article plays around with clipping paths and arrangement of information. Once again, many similar elements are repeated to maintain consistency and interest.
